Love Takes Many Forms by Lunar
Jack drew up outside Daniel’s
apartment building. He wondered yet again why he
was here. He’d had an evening of watching the game
on TV all planned. The beer was sitting in his
fridge and all he had to do was order the pizza and he
was all set. But no, here he was sitting outside
Daniel’s place and it was all Carter’s fault.
He'd been on his way home for his
hot date with the TV remote when Carter had accosted him
not five steps from the gear-up room.
“Colonel!” Carter’s voice
stopped Jack mid stride.
“Carter?” Jack answered warily
without turning round.
Sam Carter came round to stand in
front of him. “Sir, is….ah….is Daniel okay?”
“Why?” Jack frowned, he hadn’t
expected that question.
“We–ll,” she hesitated, “he’s been
kinda distant lately. Not really with us if you
know what I mean.”
Jack nodded he knew exactly what his
2IC meant. Just recently Daniel had seemed
preoccupied. He avoided answering all Jack’s
questions and hadn’t joined them for team nights for
months now. Jack felt a twinge of guilt as he’d
stopped asking Daniel over because of the hurt he felt
at Daniel’s refusal of every invitation. Daniel
didn’t seem to want to continue their friendship so Jack
had let things drift.
“I just wondered if he’d spoken to
you about what’s going on?”
“No, he hasn’t.” Jack was
suddenly irritated.
Why should Carter assume that he
knew all there was to know about Daniel? He tried
to pass her but she blocked his path with a quick side
step.
“Do you think someone should talk to
him? Try to find out if he’s okay.”
“Good idea let me know how you get
on.” Again Jack tried to shake Carter off.
Unsuccessfully.
So here he was about to try and pry
out of Daniel what was going on courtesy of Major
Samantha Carter.
Jack gave himself a mental shake,
left the truck and crossed the street. He
hesitated in front of the entrance. He took a
deep, calming breath and squared his shoulders before
going through the door. He acknowledged the
doorman.
“Doctor Jackson in?”
“Yes Colonel, go right up.”
The doorman replied having seen Jack in Daniel’s company
many times.
Jack took the elevator up to the
eighth floor, still not convinced he was doing the right
thing. He exited the elevator and knocked on
Daniel’s door before he could change his mind.
When the door wasn’t opened Jack wondered if Daniel was
asleep. ‘Maybe I should leave it’ he thought, grabbing
gratefully on to an excuse to leave.
He pressed the call button for the
elevator and then heard the sound of something breaking
from within Daniel’s apartment. Jack crossed the
hall lobby in three strides and banged on Daniel’s door
again. Jack was pulling the emergency key Daniel
had given him from his pocket when the door opened.
“Can I help you?”
Jack suspiciously eyed the stranger
in front of him. “Is Daniel there?”
“And you are?” An equally
guarded man asked.
